THOHOYANDOU - On Saturday, when millions of South Africans were celebrating the country's successful 2010 World Cup bid, the University of Venda for Science and Technology held their annual Fresher's Ball music festival at the Univen Stadium.
Unfortunately, the festivities also had an unsavoury side, when several people were allegedly beaten by a group of drunken people during the bash.
Mr Samuel Mugwena told Mirror that he had been attacked by a group of drunken people while he was dancing with others inside the stadium in celebration of the 2010 bid and as part of the 6-to-6 Univen bash.
According to him, he did nothing to provoke anyone, and thanked the people who helped him after the attack. He was hit in the face and was bleeding profusely after the attack. He was fortunate that a member of staff of Univen Radio, Mr Shandukani Madima, rescued him and rushed him to the mobile clinic at the stadium.
Some of the people who are not students of Univen told Mirror that they had paid R20 for nothing, because some of the artists were not performing live. They also stated that the arrangements for the bash had been poor, because they were seated on a stand far from the artists, and were not able to see them clearly.
The function was run by the Student Representative Assembly (SRA) of Univen. The president of the SRA, Rudzani Netshiavha, said he was not able to comment on the attacks or arrangements at present. "I am still waiting for a report from the security and health departments as to what had happened during the event. I promise that as soon as the report is brought to our attention, we will inform you, so that the people will be able to understand what actually happened.
